2003 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 |
|
Popularly referred to as the "Canada car", the red maple leaf-adorned Mitsubishi Evolution 8 is well-known to track day and autocross enthusiasts in California. It began "life" as Tâm's daily driver back in September 2003. He autocrossed in A Stock Novice class through his 2004 rookie year. It saw action at the track for the first time, along with its driver, in December 2004. In 2005 Tâm autocrossed the car in E Street Prepared class. Exhaust and suspension modifications followed. A rollbar was installed in April 2005 following a pair of track rollover incidents involving other Evos earlier that year. In late 2005, Tâm acquired a separate daily driver car. More extensive modifications to the Evo followed, since streetability was less and less of a concern. The Evo was re-classed to Street Modified class for autocross, and also began running in time trial competition at the track. In May 2006, the interior was fully gutted and a full rollcage installed, irreversibly transforming the Evo into a dedicated track/race car. The Evo will see wheel-to-wheel racing action in ARC GT1 class and NASA Performance Touring A in 2007. |

Tam acquired a white '99 Miata in late 2005 to take over daily driving duties from his Mitsubishi Evo 8 which had become prepared beyond the point of being streetable. The car sees motorsports action at local autocross events and the occasional track day, where it stands in for the Evo when the latter is undergoing work and/or repairs. Even in near-stock form it's a tremendously fun car to drive, quick and nimble in the corners and still gets over 30 miles on a gallon of regular gas! |
